Other "Pet Food" Companies: Contracting With Killers
Washington University
Washington University buys pigs from the laboratory that we investigated.
On Wednesday, May 29, 2002, a lab employee delivered several pigs to
the university. Upon returning to the facility, the employee complained
to colleagues that one of the pigs looked as though he or she was
about to die.
On Tuesday, July 16, 2002, an unnamed woman from the university called
the lab to complain that two Hanford pigs that the university had received
a week earlier were underweight and had a substantial number of abscesses.
In addition, this individual reportedly told the president and the
laboratory’s pig manager that a study had to be postponed for
two weeks in order to get the pigs’ weight up to where it should
have been.
We informed university officials of these incidents and let them know
that the facility’s pig manager had failed to provide veterinary
care to a pig who had a broken foot and to another pig whose uterus
was prolapsed.
The university has not responded to our concerns. Please ask why it
has failed to address these serious issues:
