Other "Pet Food" Companies: Contracting With Killers
Pfizer
On September 20, 2002, Pharmacia’s (Pfizer and Pharmacia have
since combined operations) Jack Bley called the laboratory in question
to report that the pigs he had ordered arrived with sores and boils
on their faces. In our letter to Pfizer about our findings at the lab,
we explained that the pigs, who had “ports” implanted into
their bodies, had been kept in the laboratory’s cage-wash area
without proper ventilation for weeks, a violation of the federal Animal
Welfare Act (AWA). The laboratory’s pig manager also failed to
provide veterinary care to a pig who had a broken foot and cruelly
kept a suffering pig, whose uterus had prolapsed “a long time
ago,” alive (without treatment) so that he could take her babies
and sell them to companies like Pfizer.
The company has not formally responded to the information that we provided.
Please ask Pfizer why it has failed to address these important issues
and what it will do to ensure that its future animal suppliers are
not mistreating animals:
