Other "Pet Food" Companies: Contracting With Killers
Merck & Company, Inc.
On Tuesday, July 2, 2002, representatives from Merck & Company,
Inc., visited the facility in question for a prearranged tour. Prior
to the tour, laboratory personnel discussed which buildings used for
housing animals should and should not be shown to the pharmaceutical
company’s employees. It was not uncommon for temperatures in
some of the buildings to reach into the 90s, and laboratory staff members
wanted to ensure that Merck & Company personnel did not experience
the unacceptable conditions that some animals housed at the facility
are forced to endure.
We informed Merck & Company of this duplicity, but the company
has not responded to our concerns. Please ask Merck & Company to
send representatives to carefully inspect all contract labs where animals
are used in testing and to ensure that they ask to see every room and
building in which animals are housed:
