Iams Sides With Hunters

In what could only be called a slap in the face for the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the Iams Company has announced that it is ending its sponsorship of HSUS’ Pet Fest America because HSUS opposes hunting.

In a letter to hunters, Iams apologizes “for the frustration that this sponsorship has caused” and pledges its continued support of hunting.

The letter was also sent to fringe pro-hunting group the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance, which opposes even tiny improvements to animals’ lives.

Iams sponsors many hunting events, including the AKC Master National Hunt Test, the Canadian National Retriever Championship, and the National Bird Dog Championship, so the company must be betting that hunters have more dogs than the rest of us.

Iams also publishes Care and Nutrition of the Sporting Dog and claims, “Dogs fed [Iams food] demonstrated superior hunting performance.”

So why is Iams slamming the door on humane societies and mainstream people who have dogs and cats in favor of pro-hunting, animal-abusing groups? It could be because Iams knows that most animal guardians are upset by the company’s cruel and needless laboratory tests on animals. Iams knows that most people who kill animals for recreation won’t care about such tests.

Even the ultraconservative Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) agree that more humane companion-animal food tests can be conducted in homes and in veterinary offices using animals volunteered by their guardians.

Please e-mail Iams CEO Jeff Ansell and tell him that fringe hunting groups won’t save his company’s hide and that you will get the word out to everyone you can.

With its apology to hunters, Iams beat HSUS to the punch—HSUS was scheduled to end its relationship with Iams after the summer Pet Fest event. HSUS now needs to join PETA in a wholehearted effort to get Iams to stop all such tests on animals.
