Iams Puts Animal Hunter on Its ‘Animal Care’ Advisory Board
What if you turned on your television and an ad for Iams was airing? In
the ad, men dressed in camouflage were blowing small, fragile birds out
of the sky with big guns and then sending their dogs to retrieve the mutilated
bodies. A strong voice-over says, “Increase your dog’s stamina
so you can kill more and he can keep on retrieving—feed him Iams
and Eukanuba.” Sound implausible? Well, the fact is that if Iams
created such an ad, it would be one of the first honest pieces of advertising
that the company had created! If you think it’s wrong to
kill animals for the fun of it, then we trust that you won’t be
buying Iams products. In response to pressure from hunters, Iams has placed hunter Kelley Donham on its animal care advisory board. Donham is a breeder of hunting dogs and a judge of field trials (events at which people disable birds, bind their feet together, and throw them into marshes so that they can sic their dogs on the frightened animals). Donham is an expert in human occupational safety hazards associated with the factory farming of cows, pigs, and chickens. The Humane Society of the U.S. is still covering for Iams despite the company's support of hunting. So why would Iams put Mr. Donham on its board? Hunters got angry with Iams when the company gave the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) a large sum of money to be the “Grand National Sponsor” of its PetFest America. The HSUS is opposed to hunting, and when word got out that Iams was bankrolling the HSUS events, hunters went for blood (click here for more information). They succeeded in making Iams dump the HSUS’ PetFest events, but then the hunters learned that the HSUS’ Andrew Rowan sits on Iams’ advisory board, so they demanded that Iams put someone on the board who would represent their issues, even though the issue is supposed to be the use of dogs and cats in pet-food tests and even though Iams has refused Andrew Rowan entry into its laboratories! According to the editors of Pointing Dog Journal, they and other hunting advocates asked Iams to appoint Donham to the board, Iams rolled over again for the hunters, and Mr. Donham is now on its advisory board. Iams also recently gave $25,000 to a "sport" hunting championship, and Iams has also published numerous articles, studies, and manuals for people who hunt with dogs. Take a look at Iams’ “advisory board”: On it, you will find vivisection industry lobbyists and representatives of animal welfare organizations that have received large financial contributions from Iams. Now there’s also an avid hunter who has no experience with dog and cat veterinary issues. The HSUS’ president, Wayne Pacelle, expressed his concerns to Iams about the company’s support and promotion of hunting yet won’t withdraw the HSUS from Iams’ pretend Animal Care Advisory Board and has refused to denounce Iams for continuing its absolutely unjustifiable animal tests. The HSUS has policies against hunting, yet this latest move is apparently still not enough to get the organization to sever its ties with Iams. And Iams will exploit its relationship with the HSUS for as long as the HSUS will allow it. Please contact Wayne Pacelle and tell him that he needs to stop providing Iams with cover, stop helping Iams avoid scrutiny of its cruel laboratory tests and its sponsorship of hunting, stop directly or indirectly endorsing animal abuse, and stop pretending that working on the “inside” is working. It isn’t. |
