During
an undercover investigation into an Iams contract laboratory, PETA discovered
that Iams kept cats and dogs, like Christmas—so named because his
laboratory identification code ended in MAS”—in tiny stainless-steel
cages and barren cement kennels inside windowless buildings where temperatures
reached dangerous extremes. Christmas developed a serious ear infection
and sores on his feet from living on concrete and slatted metal for six
long years.
Another dog, referred to only as HJBMCN, had no resting board and was
not removed from her cage during cleaning time, so she often had to sit
or lie on wet concrete. Like so many other animals, HJBMCN was given no
exercise, socialization, or psychological enrichment.
Many Iams dogs suffered cruel and painful muscle biopsies, and Iams even
allowed its dogs to be surgically debarked to silence the their tormented
cries.

Not all
dog- and cat-food companies conduct animal tests in laboratories. Some
only test food on dogs and cats kept in loving homes or who are in veterinary
offices for conditions that might benefit from a new diet.
PETA is urging Iams to end its cruel and unnecessary animal testing immediately
and rely on other available methods. And PETA and I are asking consumers
to buy only from companies that don’t test on animals in laboratories,
such as Evolution Diet, Inc., Harbingers of a New Age, Natural Life Pet
Products, Inc., Petguard, Wow Bow, Halo Purely for Pets, and Wysong Professional
Diets.
Your actions will make all the difference in the world. Together, we can
put a stop to Iams’ awful animal tests.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you!
Sincerely,

Rue McClanahan
